Chapter 9 - The Second Baptism Form

Dad had written the envelope years ago.
He had forgotten Charles's box contained it.
Inside was a confession—not about my parentage, but about silence.
Dad had discovered Michael's identity in 1992.
Charles had told him.
Dad wanted to tell Mom.
Charles begged him to wait until Michael was ready.
Then Charles died.
Michael asked for more time.
Years became decades.
Dad kept the secret.
“I thought I was protecting everyone,” he said.
Mom laughed through tears.
“So did I.”
That sentence hung between them.
Protection.
The favorite word of people who make decisions for others.
I looked at both my parents.
“That's the problem.”
Dad nodded.
“I know.”
For the first time, Mom didn't argue.
We took Ethan home.
Three days passed.
No baptism.
No family gatherings.
No calls from Mom.
Then Father Michael contacted us.
“There is another issue.”
Daniel and I returned to the church.
Maria placed a document before us.
A second baptism form.
This one had been submitted months earlier.
Before Ethan was born.
Child's proposed name:
Charles James Carter.
Mother:
Emily Carter.
Father:
Daniel Carter.
Sponsor:
Michael Reeves.
Michael had supposedly signed it.
He hadn't.
Neither had we.
Mom admitted submitting the later amendment.
But she denied this form.
The handwriting wasn't hers.
Someone else had been planning the name Charles before Mom's public stunt.
Maria checked the submission record.
The form had been delivered in person.
“By whom?”
She opened the archived visitor log.
One name.
Thomas Vale.
Margaret's brother.
The man who had terrorized my mother in 1980.
The man we assumed was long gone.
I stared at Maria.
“Is he alive?”
She nodded nervously.
“He was here yesterday.”
Daniel stood.
“Yesterday?”
“He asked when the baptism had been rescheduled.”
My blood went cold.
“How did he know it was postponed?”
Maria shook her head.
“He said he was family.”
I immediately called Margaret.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then a text arrived from her phone.
It contained a photograph.
My mother standing outside her house.
Taken from across the street.

Below it were four words:
CHARLES OWES ME EVERYTHING.
